Celebrating a Decade of ScanReach: Voices from the Maritime Industry
From one of my deployments
What inspired you to pursue a career in the maritime industry?
Honestly, I had no intention of pursuing a maritime career. I initially called the Norwegian Armed Forces to find out how soon I could complete my mandatory service
so I could move on to university. But life had other plans.
I was assigned to the Navy and was lucky enough to get to work on a frigate, and during my service, I got to see the world, with highlights like the Seychelles, Hawaii, Svalbard and New York. That experience led me to a 10-year career in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), where I gained invaluable experience, friendships, and leadership skills.
Later, I became fascinated by the impact of technology on user experience, especially after having dialogs with the developers of some of our systems onboard.
That led me to transition into software development and UX/UI design, ultimately landing a role at ScanReach, where I now get to combine my naval experience with
my passion for safety and innovation at sea.
What’s your favourite part of your role at ScanReach?
I recently transitioned into the role of Product Owner for Location Management, while still working as a Developer and UX/UI Designer. The best part of my job is that I can bridge real-life maritime experience with cutting-edge technology.
At ScanReach, I get to work closely with users, listen to their needs, and then together with a talented and innovative team, get to translate those insights into practical, life-saving solutions. The idea that I am helping to develop a system that I wish I had in the Navy is incredibly rewarding.
Can you share a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?
Right now, I’m especially proud of a new feature we’re developing to enhance our Automatic Mustering solution that already provides real time personnel location during emergencies.
🔹 Users will be able to assign muster stations to personnel in the system, allowing them to track who is accounted for and who is missing at the different muster stations.
🔹 We’re introducing different muster types which allows for activating muster stations for different muster types and we allow users to activate or deactivate muster stations as the situation evolves.
These improvements will save time and enhance emergency response in critical situations, making a real impact on maritime safety.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?
There are two things I take with me from my career so far:
🔹 Collaboration is everything. The best ideas come from teams with different perspectives working together to solve problems.
🔹 Stay curious. Whether it’s learning new skills, getting to know your colleagues, or finding new ways to solve user challenges—curiosity is key.
Listen more than you talk, and you’ll learn things you never expected.
Teamwork and collaboration in action! 💪 The ScanReach team at an escape room challenge—celebrating our achievements, strengthening our team spirit,
and having a great time along the way!
What excites you most about the future of your industry?
There’s so much to be excited about:
🌱 The green shift and how sustainability is shaping maritime operations.
📡 The digitalization of the fleet, making ships smarter and safer.
🤖 The role of AI in maritime safety, helping crews make better, faster decisions.
The industry is evolving rapidly, and I’m excited to be part of a team that is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
