Celebrating a Decade of ScanReach: Voices from the Maritime Industry

What inspired you to pursue a career in the maritime industry?

My inspiration to pursue a career in the maritime industry stems from growing up on an island in western Norway, where a strong maritime culture deeply influenced me. With a background as an able seaman and my service in the Norwegian Navy, including operational duties in the Mediterranean, I developed a strong passion for the sea and maritime operations.

After a career at sea, I developed a strong interest in the technology that powers maritime operations. I wanted to understand the electronics behind the instruments and systems we relied on daily, which led me to study electronics engineering. This knowledge not only allowed me to transition into the oil and gas industry but also ultimately brought me back to the maritime sector, where I now work with cutting-edge wireless and IoT technology to improve connectivity and data sharing.

Can you share a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?

One of my first tasks at ScanReach was implementing functionality to retrieve NMEA data—a protocol for communication between marine electronics—from various instruments
and sensors aboard ships. Our Mesh Nodes can now collect NMEA data from onboard sensors, such as vessel speed and GPS, and transmit it to the cloud. This enables customers onshore to track the vessel in real time through our OWC mesh network system.

What’s your favourite part of your role at ScanReach?

What I enjoy most about working at ScanReach is being at the forefront of innovation in the maritime industry. I get to work with cutting-edge wireless network and IoT technology, helping to bring connectivity to instruments and sensors that were previously offline and hard to reach. It’s exciting to see how our solutions improve data sharing and enhance operations at sea. Plus, having started my career at sea, it’s rewarding to contribute to advancements that make maritime operations smarter and more connected.
