Celebrate 10 Years of ScanReach – Share Your Story: Duncan Halliday

What inspired you to pursue a career in the maritime industry?

I wouldn’t say it was inspiration in the traditional sense—more like fate played its hand.

I've always had a love for the ocean. It started with family holidays by the sea, which turned into sailing, then windsurfing, and eventually working in beachside resorts. When I returned from travelling, I took a role selling advertising in the shipping industry. That’s when my fascination with maritime technology really began—and before long, I wasn’t just working in the industry, I was living it.

If I had to define the “fate” element, it’s that I got to see the ocean through a new lens. I came to understand how technology could truly empower people to manage operations in what is an incredibly complex global industry. The people I met were inspiring, and I loved the international nature of the work, travelling to amazing places and building relationships with passionate professionals. That’s what’s kept me here, 20 years on.

What’s your favourite part of your role at ScanReach?

First and foremost, it’s the people. Whether it’s the in-house developers, product team, sales team or management—everyone has been so welcoming. And then there are the customer conversations, where we get to talk about technology that can really make a difference for their operations. That human interaction is hugely rewarding.

Secondly, I really enjoy helping a tech company move from “start-up” to “scale-up.” There’s an energy and urgency to that process. You see the impact of the hard work, and to experience that journey together with great colleagues is incredibly fulfilling.

Can you share a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?

On a personal level, I have two young sons who I couldn’t be prouder of. 😊

Professionally, one that stands out is from a previous company where I was given the opportunity to lead the indirect sales channel. At the time, it was early-stage, complex, and generating little revenue. We simplified the structure, created better support, and built tools specifically for our partners. Over the following years, we saw significant growth, taking SaaS revenues from almost nothing to millions annually. It was incredibly satisfying, both personally and professionally.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

That credibility in shipping is something you have to earn—and work hard to maintain.

Senior managers in shipping, whether owners, operators or managers, see a steady stream of commercial people come through their doors. For me to still be welcome after doing this for more than 20 years is something I deeply appreciate. I’d like to think my honest, direct style, with a touch of humour, makes me easy to work with. Most importantly, I aim to deliver on what I promise.

What excites you most about the future of your industry?

Three things come to mind:

First, the people. That hasn’t changed in 20 years—I still enjoy working within the global shipping community.

Second, the challenge of selling meaningful solutions to a naturally conservative industry. Our technology at ScanReach helps ship operators become more efficient, comply with regulations, and reduce administrative burden and data errors. The exciting part is earning their trust. The rewarding part is seeing the technology succeed for them.

Third, the accelerating momentum behind digitalisation and decarbonisation. New regulations—CII, EU ETS, FuelEU, and others, are bringing commercial drivers into play, which is prompting a shift in behaviour. Shipping companies are now seeking smart technologies to reduce fuel consumption, improve operational efficiency, and maintain competitiveness. That’s a real opportunity, not just for ScanReach, but for the entire industry.
